The United States’ Most Popular Offroad Competition Events

Do you have a great Toyota 4RunnerTundra or Tacoma 4×4 that you would love to see test itself against some great offroading competition? There’s a number of U.S. offroad events all across the country that can give you the opportunity to do just that.

Here are some of the most popular U.S. offroading events and a little information about each one:

  • King of the Hammers: King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, CA, bills itself as the Ultimate Desert Race, and all lovers of offroading are encouraged to join the fun. King of the Hammers is the largest offroad racing event in North America, with over 500 teams competing last year and more than 50,000 spectators. A week-long festival that begins on January 31st, KOH includes qualifying heats, special offroad challenges and extreme endurance races. It all leads up to the big 14th Annual Nitto King of the Hammers Race on Friday, February 7th, 2020, which features the legendary ULTRA4 unlimited 4WD trucks.
  • Score Baja 1000: Those who know offroad racing know the Score International Offroad Racing Tour, which includes the Score San Felipe 25, the Score Baja 400 and the Score Baja 1000. A little bit to the south, and very popular among U.S. offroad enthusiasts, is the original desert race, The Baja 1000. It was founded by Ed Pearlman back in 1967. It is run every year on the Baja California Peninsula, and takes place this year from November 19th to the 24th. One of the most famous offroad races, it is open to everything from stock Volkswagens to trucks to motorcycles and more. Ivan Stewart rode Toyotas to victory in the Baja 1000 in both 1993 and 1998.
  • Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS): If short course offroading is more your speed, you’ll want to check out the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. The next event is the Rockstar Energy Golden State Off Road Nationals Presented by General Tire on October 5th at the Glen Helen Raceway. Racing classes for LOORRS include Pro 4 Unlimited for full-sized 4-wheel-drive trucks, the Pro 2 Unlimited for full-sized 2-wheel-drive trucks and a variety of buggy, UTV and Kart classes.
  • The Mint 400: Run from March 3rd to March 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Mint 400 is the Great American Offroad Race. First run all the way back in 1968 when it was created by Norm Johnson as a promotion for The Mint Hotel, The Mint 400 is considered by some to be the hardest and most exciting North American offroad race. When The Mint was sold in 1988, the race went with it, but it was revived in 2008 and continues to thrill racers and spectators alike.
